Surgical Chair 900 Wins 2021 Red Dot Award
This year, the Haag-Streit Surgical Chair 900 won the 2021 Red Dot Award in the Product Design category for outstanding design. For years to come, it will be improving the ergonomic experience of ophthalmic surgeons around the world.
The Surgical Chair 900 was developed in partnership with ophthalmic surgeons from the Cincinnati Eye Institute to address the chronic issues they face. These surgeons work through the lenses of a microscope while operating on a patient's eye. This can lead to strain in the neck and spine, which over the course of their careers can lead to developing musculoskeletal disorders requiring therapy and potentially neck surgery. The Surgical Chair 900 relieves this stress by providing supportive seating that encourages good posture and is part of an ergonomic solution to reduce strain on the neck, shoulders and back.
The cushions are designed for comfort over prolonged use; a supportive backrest provides focused lumbar support, and the seat cushion features a waterfall edge and memory foam which conforms to the user. The narrow backrest accommodates freedom of arm movement, allowing for neutral shoulder positioning and maximum wrist inflection. Adjustments can be found for seat height, backrest depth, and backrest height, and each is marked with indicators to record to a surgeon’s preference card. Foot pedals controlling seat height and the rear caster locks are engineered for comfort and ease of use.
The Surgical Chair 900 is an example of continuous collaboration between the user, designer, and manufacturer. The end product is a design that has been tested, validated and quickly embraced by the ophthalmic surgeons seeking to improve their operating ergonomics.

The Red Dot Awards
In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award breaks down into the three disciplines of Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. With more than 18,000 entries, the Red Dot Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 1955, a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the sought-after distinction “Red Dot” has been the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. The award winners are presented in the yearbooks, museums and online.
