Integrated Lane

Reimagining the Future of Eyecare

This concept is truly a game-changer in the exam room. We’re certain it will be the forerunner of lane designs for many years to come.
— Ernest Cavin, CEO/President of Haag-Streit USA

Reliance Medical Products partnered with Zukun on a complete rethinking of exam lane design equipment for their customers. Within 15 months of the first meeting, Reliance was able to present to the world the functional Integrated Lane Concept. The concept premiered at the AAO trade show in Chicago, Illinois in October 2018. Ophthalmologists from around the country were able to test and experience what “will be the forerunner of lane designs for many years to come” according to Ernest Cavin, CEO/President of Haag-Streit USA.

Using a human-centered design approach, the Integrated Lane Concept considers the entire exam experience of both the patient and the doctor.

After conducting multiple studies on how ergonomics can fundamentally change the exam room experience, the new lane design addresses several common issues. These issues include doctor’s musculoskeletal disorders caused by forced poor posture, patient physical and psychological comfort, and more efficient movement of equipment to streamline the exam process. Accessibility was considered from the beginning — the design is intentionally and universally inclusive for all patients.

The Integrated Lane Concept is an ongoing development project to revitalize the eye exam experience through a fully modernized equipment offering.

Field Research

User Harmony

The integrated lane is a ground-up redesign of the chair-stand combo based on field research and four key themes: doctor focus, patient focus, technology focus, and holistic design.

The outcome is a balance between the needs of users, interaction with equipment and technology, and the building of a positive and welcoming experience within a medical practice.

Doctor Focus

Prioritize Ergonomics

The Integrated Lane improves doctor ergonomics, extending their career and prioritizing their health and comfort.

Constantly reaching, bending, and hunching down can take a toll on a doctor’s musculoskeletal system. Keeping everything within easy reach of the doctor during the exam reduces strain and stress. The Integrated Lane prioritizes ease of adjustment and offers preset capability to help doctors maintain healthy and comfortable posture.

Computer integration allows the doctor to face the patient while interacting with the computer, so they don’t have to turn back and forth from a desk.

The ergonomic benefits of the lane also translate into efficiency gains, by automating functions and making things easier to control.

Patient Focus

Inclusive

The integrated lane was designed to be intentionally and universally inclusive.

The chair is more friendly and safe toward patients with mobility/falling concerns: the footrest on the floor eliminates the precarious “climb” into the chair, the seat height is ADA compliant, the armrest can swing outward to be a support handle, and the “heels-back” design facilitates easier standing.

Comfort

Patient physiological comfort was considered in the molded seat, extra-roomy width, and forgiving armrests that expand outwards up to 10°.

The equipment has been specifically designed for patient comfort and to put their mind at ease. This is done through simple forms and natural materials.

The chair and stand are designed for a better exam experience, putting patients at eye-level with the doctor, offering a welcoming environment and reinforcing the perception of high-quality care that doctors strive to provide.

Technology Focus

Smart Integration

The modern doctor is expected to take full advantage of the latest advances in technology.

Technology has been integrated throughout the system with no visible wiring. The built-in PC is fully integrated into the design with an articulating monitor arm and ergonomic keyboard arm.

External wired or wireless network connections allow for EHR access.

Motor controls and sensors are populated throughout for preset capability. Hand and foot controls are wireless with docking/charging stations in convenient locations.

The lane also features LED lighting in the form of a welcoming ambient light on the back side of the column and an articulating direct examination light.

Holistic Design

Style and Function

Aesthetically the equipment is modern, clean and simple, with smooth surfaces and contoured touch points. The modern chair is built on frames with compound curves, like an office chair, for greater comfort and style.

As a consideration for small exam rooms, the stand is slim, allowing the unit to be placed close to the wall. The instruments are designed with 90° deployment and linear motion, making it easy to return them to an orderly home position.

Customization enables each practice to have a distinctive style through easy-to-change upholstery, painted panels, and solid-surface tops.
